For decades, millions of people plagued by seemingly incurable acne found relief in a medication called Accutane, also known by the clinical name isotretinoin, and distributed under several different names, such as Claravis, Amnesteem, and Sotret to name a few. Unfortunately, these medications can also cause severe injury or ailment to internal organs, such ulcerative colitis.
The manufacturer of Accutane, Hoffman-LaRoche, Inc., has settled multiple major lawsuits for failing to adequately warn patients about the debilitating side effects caused by the drug. The company has paid out more than $50 million in settlements.
The company removed the drug from pharmacy shelves in 2009, citing business reasons that are allegedly unrelated to patient illness. However, some generic forms of this dangerous drug are still widely available, marketed as Amnesteem (Mylan Pharmaceuticals), Claravis (Barr Laboratories), and (Sotret) Ranbaxy Laboratories Inc. These generics warn of side effects including the bowel disorder, organ damage, depression, birth defects, serious skin conditions, and other dangerous conditions. The FDA determined that Accutane was, in fact, responsible for multiple suicides, many infant deaths, and hundreds of birth defects.
Ulcerative colitis causes pain and inflammation in the digestive tract, ulcers in the lining of the large intestine, colon, and rectum. The condition causes bouts of diarrhea, stomach pain and rectal bleeding. There is no cure for the condition and many patients continue to suffer in spite of the fact that they have long since discontinued taking the acne medication.
The connection between Accutane and ulcerative colitis is well-established. The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC studied data from thousands of affected peopled, and found that Accutane made patients several times more likely to develop ulcerative colitis than those who did not use Accutane. Studies suggested that increasing the dosage of Isotretinoin correspondingly increased the risk of developing ulcerative colitis.
