What is Asbestos?
Asbestos belongs to a group of naturally occurring minerals with long, fibrous crystals. The Greeks call asbestos the "miracle mineral" for its soft and pliant properties, as well as its ability to withstand heat.
Asbestos was widely used throughout the twentieth century in a number of industries. Individuals were exposed to asbestos working in auto repair, shipyards, mines, mills, heating and construction industries, the navy, and working as ironworkers and pipefitters.
Sadly, asbestos has been found to be highly toxic. The exposure to asbestos can cause serious illness, including mesothelioma. Spouses, children, and other family members exposed to a worker's clothes can also develop illness.
What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of cells lining the body's internal organs. There are four cancerous forms of mesothelioma; Pleural, Peritoneal, Pericardial, and Testicular mesothelioma.
Pleural Mesothelioma - develops in the lining of the lungs and accounts for 70 percent of mesothelioma cases
Symptoms: fever, fatigue, dry cough, coughing up blood, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, painful breathing, shortness of breath, abnormal lumps on chest
Peritoneal Mesothelioma - this form of mesothelioma develops in the lining of the abdominal cavity and accounts for 25 percent of the cases
Symptoms: night sweats, fever, fatigue, chest pain, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat
Pericardial Mesothelioma - approximately 5 percent of all mesothelioma cases, this form develops in the lining of the heart
Symptoms: night sweats, fever, fatigue, anemia, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, weight loss, swelling or pain in abdomen, abnormal lumps on abdomen
Testicular Mesothelioma - the rarest form of the cancer which develops in the tunica vaginalis of the testicles has accounted for less than 100 cases
Unfortunately, in most cases symptoms do not appear for many years after the exposure to asbestos. On average, symptoms start showing anywhere from 15 to 50 years later.
