What is Fosamax?
Fosamax was designed to help people suffering from osteoporosis, or the thinning of the bones; however recent studies and multiple lawsuits indicate that Fosamax may cause osteonecrosis, better known as "jaw death", or a breakdown of the jaw bone.
Some patients claim that long term use can rot your jaw. Others claim that they have lost their jaw entirely. For some patients, a simple tooth extraction by their dentist can cause a jaw to shatter. Worse yet, most dentists are unaware of the problems Fosamax can cause and don't know how to prepare themselves or their patients.
Fosamax, manufactured by Merck & Company, is just one more drug from their company medicine cabinet that is now under scrutiny by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Fosamax, another blockbuster drug for Merck & Co, brings in 3 Billion dollars in annual sales.
Two years ago, Merck & Co. was forced to recall Vioxx, a popular pain medication that brought it about 2.5 Billion dollars annually. Merck is still trying to reel itself back from that scandal.
People are most alarmed when they discover that Merck & Co. has yet to meet the FDA's request in 2004 to issue a warning to physicians and patients on the potential link of Fosamax to "jaw death". Merck contends they did issue a warning -- a few lines of text buried a 22-page document submitted to pharmacies that dispense Fosamax.
It is strongly suggested that Merck knew Fosamax could cause bone loss in the jaw but refused to change the labeling because it could mean a loss in profit.
