Nursing Home Neglect
The condition of nursing homes can be frightening. If you have ever visited one, you may remember the horrible conditions that were an assault to your senses, and your sensibilities - you were shocked to see, hear, and even smell the evidence of elder care abuse. If you reside in, or have placed a family member in a nursing home you know the decision to do so was very difficult. After placement in a long term care facility, many people typically will not have the time to watch them, or visit. One reasonably expects that the care facility will take care of their family members that need care, and do it well. After all, that is their specialty, and that is what they emphasized to you in order to get your business.
We often hear reports of nursing homes that gave wonderful, emotional presentations in order to get you to place your loved one in their facility. They explained that they would take adequate precautions to prevent skin ulcers, falls, and simply promised that your loved one's quality of life would be maintained at a dignified level, and perhaps, even made better, because of their alleged ability to provide constant care and supervision.
There is a reason that so much nursing home neglect is reported by the media today: it's because nursing home abuse or neglect has gone on for far too long - it continues, despite public outcry. There is no reason why you or your loved one has to endure the neglect, and at times outright abuse while in a nursing home. These care facilities owe it to you to provide proper care, and they are obliged to make sure the nursing home resident has a decent and dignified existence.
When that does not happen the result is frustration, disappointment and anger - all of which is unnecessary, and preventable.
