On February 26, 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about the chronic use of Reglan (metoclopramide) to treat gastrointestinal disorders and required these products to have a boxed warning about the risk of its long-term or high-dose use.
What is Reglan?
Reglan is used to increase muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract, which speeds up the rate the stomach empties into the intestines. Reglan is used short-term (no longer than 12 weeks) to treat gastrointestinal disorders.
Therapy longer than 12 weeks has not been evaluated and should be avoided. Treatment with metoclopramide can cause Tardive Dyskinesia, a serious movement disorder that causes involuntary movements such as;
- Grimacing, puckering or pursing of the lips
- Tongue protrusions or lip smacking
- Rapid eye movements and blinking
- Involuntary movements of the arms, legs, and fingers
These serious movement disorders are often irreversible.
