What are Pain Pumps?
Pain pumps are used to deliver a controlled amount of anesthetics directly to the surgical site or close to the nerves associated with the surgical area for post-surgery pain management. The anesthetics are stored in a balloon which sits outside of the body. A catheter connected to the balloon is then implanted into the surgical area and delivers the medication for up to 72 hours. Once the medication is gone, the patient simply removes the catheter and disposes of the pain pump.
Who manufactures pain pumps?
Some manufacturers of pain pumps include I-Flow Corporation, Stryker Corporation, and DonJoy Inc.
What are the problems with pain pumps?
Shoulder pain pumps have been linked to Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL), severe damage of the cartilage of the shoulder. Studies have linked the loss of cartilage to directly injecting medication into the joint. According to a study by The American Journal of Sports Medicine, nearly 63% of patients using intra-articular pain pumps are at risk of cartilage loss.
