What Kind of Injuries Result from a Car Accident

Viles & Beckman

Types of Car Accident Injuries

No matter the situation or the cause of a car accident, there are a number of serious injuries that can be sustained as a result of negligence. Unfortunately, not all of these injuries are immediately apparent, so individuals fail to take the action to seek medical attention.

However, it’s important to know the types of injuries that may be sustained as a result of a car accident and why it is so important to get medical attention quickly. Here are some of the most common and very serious injuries individuals sustain as the result of a car accident.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, are some of the most serious injuries that can be sustained in a car accident. Typically, this is an injury that can lead to long-term damage, including cognitive impairment, development and behavioral issues, and more. Traumatic brain injuries are defined as an injury that causes damage to the brain via a blow to the head.

Car Accident Concussions

One of the most common examples of a traumatic brain injury is the concussion. This kind of injury is on the more mild side of the traumatic brain injury spectrum yet it is not to be taken lightly. A concussion is essentially when someone suffers a blow to their head that leaves them with temporary cognitive malfunction. The symptoms of this injury include:

  • Dizziness
  • Loss of Balance
  • Sleepiness
  • Slurred Speech
  • Confusion
  • Loss of Coordination
  • Nausea
  • Loss of Consciousness

While concussions are not as initially severe as many other traumatic brain injuries they can get worse when not attended to by a physician. Repeated concussions can cause second-impact syndrome or CTE. There are a number of other forms of traumatic brain injury that will similarly affect a person’s cognitive injuries by causing brain damage that can end up being permanent such as brain contusions and even penetrating brain injuries.

Spinal Cord Damage

Most commonly sustained when someone is hit in a rear-end accident, spinal cord damage is common when someone has whiplash. If serious enough, spinal cord damage can lead to paralysis, which impacts an individual fort their entire lives. The spinal cord is the spongey bundle of nerves that is surrounded by the bone of the vertebrae. The spinal cord will typically suffer damage because of pressure that is placed on it because of something like a herniated disc or tearing caused by a fractured vertebra.

Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash is one of the most common types of car accident injuries since it is typically caused by one of the most common types of car accidents which is the rear-end accident. Whiplash injuries occur when the jerking movement caused by a car accident results in damage to the neck which can include damage to the muscles and vertebrae that compose it. Whiplash injuries can often go unnoticed for a bit since symptoms may sometimes not show for a few days.

Broken Bones

Regardless of how much protection a person has, broken bones can occur very easily as a result of the body jolting back and forth in the vehicle. This is also the result of the frame of the vehicle collapsing into the driver or passenger. Broken bones can end up being much worse than people expect. There are times when a lung can get punctured by a broken rib or a blood vessel can be cut by another broken bone.

The frame of the vehicle and the glass that can shatter in an accident are very sharp. This often leaves potential for an individual to suffer lacerations from either glass flying or the frame coming into contact with a part of the body.
